A well-conceived approach, calling it non-dramatic would be an understatement. One thing that can perhaps defy one’s cinematic senses or disappoint entirely is its treatment. Despite the lack of resources at their disposal and some technical downsides, it deserves all the praise it has been garnering all the while. Perhaps due to the obstacles faced during the making, you end up seeing a few discontinuities from camera’s perspective to that of director’s. Camera tries to impart characters’ strain visually and you don’t even realise that for a long period. For a major part, a conscious effort is taken in order to make the film look dull, tedious. But what I liked more is that the photography doesn’t hinder the storytelling. The visual beauty of this film dwells in its rawness, with each shot trying to create the unrest and act as a distinct character. The good part is that these imperfections are not quite noticeable and you remain with the story. That said, his inexperience does create a contrasting picture otherwise. He does whatever he could in his other task, pulling off a slew of noteworthy moments. His familiarity with relationships, psyches, backdrop, politics reflect well through his writing and to some extent on screen as well. This very much reveals Bhaurao Karhade’s familiarity with the topic and his understanding of screenwriting. The pace at which both characters and events unfold befits the flow. In the absence of a standard plot, some beautifully-written elements unify as events which, in turn, help shape the bigger story. You see characters wandering with their livestock slowly and steadily, so much slow that you get enough time to brace yourself. You witness hinterlands of rural Maharashtra. It follows an uncluttered format or no format at all. If breaking down in one line, Khwada basically sums up as a good-versus-bad film with a difference. Thankfully though, the subject doesn’t stand in the way of the narrative. Staying true to its essence, Khwada illustrates obstacles in life and the never-ending journey that ensues. Scapegoats of government policies, they desire dignified living in unstable times. They are homeless, strong-willed, but powerless against a system. No wonder you see their flaws or weaknesses generating ample conflict. However, having perfect characters is like hitting a bottleneck. Given the interrelation between regional settings and poverty in our films, this one steps up its realism beyond conventional norms. But the moment you know how well they earn for themselves, you start sensing the difference.

Through its protagonist, the film talks about the entire shepherd community and how their lives are unstable, full of challenges and how at times, they have to pay a heavy price for survival with dignity.A family of shepherds forced to migrate in search of a steady life doesn’t sound like a story told for the first time, nor is it the first to address the cause.
Balu`s angst for finding resolution culminates in a heart-wrenching climax of the film. This further hurts Ashokrao`s ego who vows to finish him. Feeling the pain of Ashokrao`s separatist remarks, Balu applies his full strength and breaks the wrestler`s spine and runs away. Ashokrao compels Balu to a wrestle with his ace wrestler. In one of the wrestling competitions, Balu defeats Ashokrao`s academy wrestlers, which leads to animosity between him and Balu. Balu and his family bear everything silently. Fate brings them to a village headed by the rowdy, Ashokrao, who along with his fellow wrestlers terrorizes all the adjoining villages and very often creates trouble by picking up the sheep of poor shepherds.

Balu, a budding wrestler and a daydreamer, foreseeing prosperity and good future in agriculture hopes to find his family a permanent settlement instead of day-to-day wandering. Fighting a legal battle for over 10 years in the hope of getting back his land from the forest department, the film narrates the story of Raghu Karhe who along with his wife and two sons - Panda and Balu, his daughter-in-law and grandson, all of whom wander, shepherding sheep from one village to another.
